History of Magick project revived
«
on:
August 06, 2006, 11:04:09 AM »
Creature is back from her vacation of laziness and vice, and would like to know if people are interested in reviving the
Hsitory of Magick research project
.
Anyone is welcome to join, whether you know a lot on the topic or absolutely nothing. The way this works is like this: we have a list of topics we are going to research (over on the main project page linked to below). We do each topic in order.
Everyone stays on the same topic untill it is finished
(in big letters 'cause this caused a bit of confusion last time when the prject was starting up). When we are finished w/ a topic, we go on to the other one.
Example: we beging w/ the topic "Ancient Egyptian magick and mysticism". Each of us reads what we can find on this topic. Then each of us posts a summary of what he/she found, what he/she found particularly interesting, how this tradition compares to others, their own work inspired by the tradition researched (spells, rituals, art, etc), and so on. We would also meet in chat live and discuss the topic. After we are done w/ Egypt, we go on to the next topic on the list.
It would be really great if we had people of different knowledge and experience levels w/ us on this. So that, for example, someone who knows nothing about the topic being researched, they find out basic stuff about it and get aquainted w/ it. But someone who has done research on this before, they don't have to waste their time reviewing the basics, but can go deeper into more specific stuff.
If you know someone off Veritas (another web community, real life, etc) who you think may be interested in something like this, please invite them. Also, if you know someone who knows a great deal about the history of magick, ask them to contact me, because we need help in organizing the topics.
If you are interested, please PM me (or e-mail the_creature {aT] operamail <d0t} com Also, in your PM or e-mail please include your timezone in +/- GMT format (for example, I'm in Central timezone, so it would be -6 GMT). This would be used to find a semi-mutually acceptable time for chats. You can find your timezone GMT value, by looking at your computer clock. In Windows, double click on the clock in the lower right hand courner of your screen, click on the timezone tab. Your timezone should be selected in the top drop down box. GMT value is on the left.

I am not an accomplished mage yet, but I am a skilled researcher, and have been looking for a way to contribute to the utility this site. This sounds like a great way to do just that, sign me up!

Great! Welcome aboard. PM me your timezone in GMT format, please, so that we can calculate chat times properly.
Thanks

I'm back and willing to write again. I'm a writer, its what I do. Even if all I do for Egypitian magick is worship the gods/get to know them, I'm going to start summoning eventually. I'm reading an online book about Egyptian magic (k). Ready whenever you are.
I'm here for you all. I look forward to the research project continuing.

Yey! That means we have 7 people so far (but always looking for more
). I'd say let's start on the first topic: Egyptian Magick. We need a sort of a deadline for when we should have most of our research done and post our research reports/reflections/etc (no particular format, just you know, something to convey what we've learned, what we think about it, what we found especially interesting about the magick traditon in question, etc). Somewhere around the time of the deadline we'll decide on when we'll have the live chat.
I'll be sending out reminders and updates regarding the project over PM like last time.
If you would rather receive those via e-mail or something else like IM or something, please let me know. This option will probobly be good for people who wanna participate in the project but don't visit the forums that often.
I also will be posting the same reminders here in the thread, 'cause I know some people (like me) sometimes read the forums but don't always check their PM boxes. And as always, the status of the project will be posted on the main project page:
http://vsociety.net/wiki/History_of_magick_research_project
The Announcements section right after the cheezy intro will have the most important updates. It's also dated, so that you know when the update was posted. Therefore, if you would rather not receive the PMs or e-mails but just check this thread or the wiki page for updates, also, please let me know. I don't send updates all that often, though, so your inbox won't be flooded, I promise ^_^.
We still need a person who knows a whole lot about the history of mjk to help us out, though. It's not totally essential, we can do (and have done in the past) without it, but it would be really helpful. Even if they don't want to spend time to actually research every traditon w/ us, we could still use their help. For starters, we need someone knowledgeble about the subject to look over the
list of traditions we're gonna study
and approve or modify the order the're in. The idea is to study the traditions sort of in the order they developed, so that we may esily see the parallels between them, see which tradition borrows what from what tradition(s) that have existed before it.
So if you know anyone who is real knowledgeble about this stuff, please have them PM me, post here or come to the project chat. Or just give me their contact info. The person doesn't have to be from Veritas either. Anyone you know in another mjk community or in real life, school, colledge, etc.
Anther thing:
If there is anyone who wants to help out w/ the project but is only willing to do research on one or just a few topics versus going through all of them in order like we're planning to, don't let that stop you. PM me and let me know what topic(s) you are interested in doing. When we as a group get to those topics, I will let you know and you can join us

Oh, and guys, I think I found us a person who knows lots about history and would be able to help us out!
* Creature excited! ><
Ok, I think it's time to set the deadline now. I'd say end of day Sunday, September 3 (2006(duh!)). What do you all think? If you have any objections/comments/etc, please post them here in this thread.
Chat time will be decided upon later. I also think we should pick a different name for the irc channel then we had before. #vresearch just sounds lame. Any ideas?
So what exactly do we do?
Ok. Basically when you finish your research, post your findings in a thread entitled "RP: Egyptian Magick" (RP standing for Research Project). If you are the first one who's done w/ the research, create a thread of that name. If you are not the first one, post your stuff as a
replay
to the thread the first person created. Here are 2 examples from the begining of this year when the project first started:
RP: Shamanism Thread
RP: Assyro-Babylonian Mysticism
You can post your stuff in any format you like. You can do a summary, quotes from the books you read, comments on the stuff you find most interesting/cool/dusturbing/etc. If you have time, it'd probobly be good to read the previous posts above you so that we don't go posting repeated info. If the research you did inspired you to create something like a ritual based on mjkl techniques of the tradition in question, you can post that. Works of art, poetry, etc inspired by the tradition are cool too. Basically anything related to the topic is fair game. We want to make this as fun, informative and diverse as possible.
Here's a really important point, though:
1) use more than one source
2)
Site (sp?) your sources!!!!!
.. in such a way that a person who is interested would be able to find the book/website/article you used if they want to read the whole thing.
Also, do try to use "respectable" sources. If it comes from a website hosted on geocities w/ large purple text and abundance of spinning pentagrams and sparkling unicorns.. umm.. how should I put this... let's just say I'd trust National Geographic, the books you find in the "history" section of your public library or even Wikipedia more..
One more thing: before we were planning on reading completely one or more books/texts that are associated w/ the tradition if they are available. Does anyone wanna do this?
If you are interested there are a couple of Ancient Egyptian texts at the
http://www.sacred-texts.com
website.

Hey, guys
I think we should move the deadline a week foreward to Sunday, September 10. I hope that's ok w/ everyone. It'll give us more time to do a better job.
As usual, if you have any concerns or suggestions, please let me know.
PS. We've got 10 people now! Weee!!

The wiki you mean? Did you create an account? The last I checked when you click edit, if you're not logged in, it gives you an option to log in (just fill out username and password at the top and click "log in" button on the right), or to create an account (fill out all the fields on this page and click "create account" button on the right (below the "log in" one)).

How about a program to add more positive and TRUE information about magic to wikipedia? I mean, anyone can edit and create pages on wikipedia as long as they have an account set up. We could put in some history of magic, then put in real information about it, and list some of the websites and sources that give valuable information on its application (like veritas)
. Based on what I have seen with wikipedia, all we would need to do would be to make sure no false information is put onto the wikipedia pages. If we did all that, we would be helping out the magic community and spreading GOOD info about magic, maybe even getting more people to join veritas. It might be a good idea and it is generally trusted by most people as it is an encyclopedia that millions, if not billions of people use daily. That seems like an ideal place to post information about magic, psionics, etc. The history of magic program could get the real history of different forms of magic and add it to wikipedia pages. From what I know the current magic pages are detailed and slightly fluffed out from nonspecific people talking in vague terms. Wikipedia could be a good place to refer users to as well since it is so trusted a place, it is easy to access, and it is easy to post information on
.
-Razeroth
EDIT: You don't need a wiki account to EDIT existing pages on wikipedia, but you do need one to CREATE them.
