Appendix B: Z-SCORE and Probability
There are four important statistics regarding the experiments described in this
book. They are arithemetic mean, standard deviation, z-score, and probability.
This section discusses each in detail, including how to calculate them.
Arithmetic Mean
Arithemetic mean
, or average, is (in this situation) the number of hits
expected by chance alone.
Mean = (Total trials) * (Chance expressed as a fraction)
For instance, if there are 30 total trials, and there are 5 cards, then chance
is 1/5. The mean is 30 * (1/5) = 30/5 = 6. If there are 78 trials, and 5 cards,
the mean is 78 * (1/5) = (78 / 5) = 15.6.
Standard Deviation
Standard deviation
describes the amount that scores would vary by naturally. It
is directly based on the chance value for the situation. The formula here is
used only when chance is a known value, such as 1/4, or 1/5, or some other
fraction.
Standard Deviation = square root ( mean / 2 )
For example, if there are 30 trials, and 1/5 is chance, the mean is 6. To
calculate the standard deviation, take the mean divided by two = 6/2 = 3, and
find the square root of that. The square root of 3 is 1.73. Therefore, one
standard deviation is 1.73.
If there are 78 trials, and 1/5 is chance, the mean is 15.6. That divided by
two = 15.6 / 2 = 7.8. The square root of 7.8 is 2.79. Therefore, one standard
deviation is 2.79.
Z-Score
Z-Score
describes how far a score is away from the mean, measured in standard
deviations. For the score line below, assume 30 trials, chance 1/5, mean 6.
Each section marked SD measure the distance of 1 standard deviation.
If you actually got 1 hit, instead of the expected 6 hits, your score would be
about 3 standard deviations away. That would mean your z-score was 3. The
z-score can be a decimal value, rather than just an integer (for the score of 4
hits, as an example). The formula for calculating it exactly is as follows.
Z-score = (Actual hits obtained - Expected Mean) / (standard deviation)
So in this case, z-score = (1 - 6) / 1.73 = -5 / 1.73 = -2.89. The negative
sign indicates that you got fewer hits than expected; you psi-missed instead of
psi-hit. The value of the z-score is more important than the direction.
The z-score becomes a more accurate measure as the number of trials gets large.
It's best used when the mean is at least 10, and all the better if the mean is
in the thousands (such as with computerized random number generators). Since
the amount of effect that PK has been studied to have is somewhere between 1 in
100 bits, to 1 in 1000 bits, it's best if you can do several hundred trials
with a random number generator, in order to measure your effect.
Probability of Z-Score
Probability of the Z-score
is the percentage chance of that z-score being due
to random chance alone, and not to your efforts. It is the measuring stick of
proof for scientific experiments. You need a 5% probability or less that the
results are due to chance, in order to have proven an effect. Some experiments
have even more rigorous requirements; a probability of 1%, or of 0.1% as proof.
You must get down at least to 5% to begin with.
The actual probability formula involves calculus and would be difficult to
explain here. Instead, I've provided a table showing the important range of
z-scores and probability values. Two important significance levels: a z-score
of 1.65 or greater means the probability is 5% or less. A z-score of 2.33 or
greater means the probability is 1% or less.
Formula Summary
Mean = (Total trials) * (Chance expressed as a fraction)
Standard Deviation = square root ( mean / 2 )
Z-score = (Actual hits obtained - Expected Mean) / (standard deviation)

Appendix C: Scientific Organizations
Many organizations have publications available to members at lower costs or for
free. They also often provide library or research services of various sorts.
The publications and services listed are, obviously, an incomplete list..
Typical yearly memberships are $30-$70 US, with discounts available for
students, spouses, and senior citizens.
Contact the organization you're interested in for up to date membership and
publication costs.
