Forums Updated: vBulletin 3.0.0 Release Candidate 1

Just under a month has passed since the release of our forums, in which time a lot of teething problems with the new style have been identified and resolved, along with the usual scattering of PHP and Javascript code errors, but the code has now evolved to the point where we are ready to say that the code making up this Release Candidate version is potentially the same as that in the final, stable (Gold) release.

You will notice that the new images are not a part of this release, as they are taking more time than expected to produce, but they will be along in time for the final, Gold version of vBulletin 3.0.0.

All efforts in producing this version have been towards stabilizing the existing code, rather than creating new functionality, and hence at a glance you may see no difference between vB3 Gamma and vB3 RC1. However, more than 170 bugs and issues have been identified and fixed in the past month, resulting in the most secure and stable version of vBulletin so far.

Here is a short list of some of the bugs and problems that have been resolved in this updated version:
  • "Invalid birthday" error on registration
  • Made all HTTP header redirects HTTP 1.1 compliant
  • Missing "Browse" button on uploads
  • Unable to log into moderators' control panel
  • Page can't be scrolled in IE while page is loading
  • Forms in drop down menus not submittable in Safari
  • Password-protected forums show too much information in last post column
  • Problems logging into password-protected forums
  • Emails show headers in the body / emails rejected because they contain an invalid character in the header
  • PMs unable to be deleted
  • array_merge() causes errors on PHP5
  • Phrases case insensitive in the control panel, but case sensitive when used
  • Improper language and encoding of RSS feeds
  • Images paths incorrect when CSS is saved as files
  • Problems deleting a thread
  • Assorted style fixes
  • Assorted phrase fixes
Feature Changes
  • No longer limited to 30 options for custom profile fields of type: select and radio
  • Attachment Manager now displays "File Uploading" message when user submits a file.
  • Attachment Manager now updates the post window when an attachment is made.
  • The required birthday field for coppa registration now includes the day.
  • Admin can set force the Quick Reply editor to be standard, enhanced, or WYSIWYG (if user can use it), overriding the user's chosen editor.
  • Custom profile fields can now be included during registration without making them be required.
Language System Changes

Changes to the language system and phrases since Gamma have been minimal, although a small number of phrases have been added to the system.

Template Changes

A large number of templates have been changed since Gamma, primarily to fix cross-browser rendering issues. A few noteworthy changes include the following:
[list=1]
  • In order to remove hard-coded text in certain javascript (.js) files, the editor_clientscript template has had some significant changes. If you have customized this template you should seriously consider reverting it to the original code or you risk your members not being able to post messages.
  • It was found that the experimental variable $vboptions[abspath] created more problems than it solved. Therefore, any template that contained the following text src="$vboptions[abspath]/clientscript/ has had that text changed to simply src="clientscript/
  • In the Gamma release, all images were instructed to have 'vertical-align:middle' via the CSS editor. This caused problems for many people using images in tables, so this system has been abandoned in favor of a selective system, whereby images that need to have vertical-align:middle now get that styling via class="inlineimg".
Because this version is far more stable, I can begin further customising our system, expanding on it. That's all folks, nothing to see here, move along. :D

Release Candidate 1.1

I have updated the register and login functions to deflect a dangerous security bug. A few users who registered during RC1 might have problems logging in... use the password reset and everything should be okay. The users that already registered back in Gamma phase should encounter no problems.

The remaining bugs will be destroyed with the release of RC2, which will be updated tonight or tomorrow. Again, don't expect wild functions, the Release Candidates exist to stabilize the Veritas system. :)

vBulletin 3.0.0 Release Candidate 2

The number of serious bugs found with RC1 has been very small, so we are now able to put forward Release Candidate 2, which includes fixes for all the bugs identified in RC1.

A good portion of the bugs found with vBulletin 3 Release Candidate 1 were related to cross-browser compatability of the new templates, and efforts have been made to rectify these. One of the biggest changes has been to the postbit template, which in both RC1 and the Gamma version used
tags controlled by CSS to achieve its layout. Unfortunately it would appear that many browsers just aren't ready for this, so in an attempt to make the postbit template easier to edit for novice administrators and to preserve styling across the widest range of browsers, this template has been rewritten to use a simple table-based layout instead. Visually the template should appear identical to the RC1 and Gamma versions, but lots more browsers display it correctly now.

On Sunday a bug was discovered in the Release Candidate 1 code that we felt represented a security problem, and a patch release was issued. This issue affects only RC1 and only users who registered on the board after RC1 was installed. This bug has been eliminated completely for RC2.

List of Bugs Fixed

  • Changed postbit and bbcode_* templates to use tags rather than
tags for increased cross browser compatibility. (This should also fix several related bugs.)
  • Fixed possible security issue relating to logging in. Note: some users may need to request a new password in order to be able to login.
  • Readded no-cache header setting, which was mistakenly left out.
  • Forced sending of no-cache headers in the admin control panel.
  • Fixed situation where "Edit Avatar" didn't show when it was supposed to.
  • Fully removed references to $vboptions['abspath']
  • Fixed issue causing '//' to be displayed in the URL after being redirected.
  • Fixed fatal error when using certain forum jump options.
  • Admin editing member's post can result in signature not being shown.
  • Last post info bleeds into adjacent cells (Mozilla, Opera).
  • Inability to set unlimited attachment count.
  • Assorted style issues.
  • Assorted language issues.
  • This thread will be updated again shortly, either with the final RC (Number three) or the final release of this forum system.

    Thanks for waiting.

    Hi

An RSS feed was mentioned as having been fixed, but is there an RSS feed for the site?

    Thanks.

Not as far as I know. Note that the thread you posted in was from 2004, though.
