Lifted this from a non-metaphysical forum, I don't know where it originally comes from (and I don't think it's really a "poem" per se, but whatever).  I tend to somewhat dislike depictions of "God" as being personal, but the message behind this is too good to pass up.

- - - - -

I asked God to take away my habit.
God said, "No."

It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said, "No."

His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said, "No."

Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is learned.

I asked God to give me happiness.
God said, "No."

I give you blessings; Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain.
God said, "No."

Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said, "No."

You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, "No."

I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things.

I ask God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me.
God said...

Ahhhh, finally you have the idea!

I hope you don't mind, but I found a similar poem and wanted to share it here as well. It is from a PDF file, Inspiring Thoughts.

THE DIFFERENCE

I got up early one morning
And rushed right into the day;
I had so much to accomplish
That I didn’t have time to pray.

Problems just tumbled about me,
And heavier came each task;
“Why doesn’t God help me?”
I wondered.
He answered, “You didn’t ask.”

I wanted to see joy and beauty,
But the day toiled on gray and bleak;
I wondered why God didn’t show me.
He said, “But you didn’t seek.”

I tried to come into God’s presence;
I used all my keys in the lock.
God gently and lovingly chided,
“My child, you didn’t knock.”

I woke up early this morning,
And paused before entering the day;
I had so much to accomplish
That I had to take time to pray.
