What about a book rating system? Something that members who have taken the time to read the books listed in the Library that allows them to give a 1-5 star.

Good idea. This should go to the voting forum.

I don't know that this is a matter for voting but rather a matter of if we are capable of implementing it.

That is what I was worried about.

You can easily register to Edit the Veritas Wiki on the main page. Then create a category of book ratings. Then post a thread somewhere on the forums, and if things are well-organized and neat, it could potentially be stickied and read often and have a good deal of contributions.
I'm not sure how to do it, but on the Wiki, I'm sure there is a bit of code somewhere, possibly just a general survey code that can be implemented on a page for each book that is being reviewed.
So the question is, who is willing to go through each book in the library to make a Wiki page for it, and then add in the survey code?

I won't lie, I am not well versed in html. Is there not a code or script that could be made to put just a star system right by each link?

Well, for starters, wiki software is only partly html based. It has it's own easy to learn method of handling pages and such. I learned how to do everything I did on the vWiki just by experimenting.
You could probably find a star system or rating system for wikis with a google search. If I find some time tonight or tomorrow I'll try to round up a few links for you, but I'm pressed for time and am going to bed when I hit "Post".

I think rating books would be a big misnomer anyway. We each find different things useful in different writings. Some writings would harmonize with some and not with others so the rating is an opinion really.

Well a general opinion on the quality or scope or general relevance of a text would be helpful - still subjective mind you, but certainly helpful.

ok granted but I would rather someone make a post about what they liked or disliked rather then rated it by stars although it was a good idea. I don't want to diminish from anyones input here.

The easiest way this could be implemented, would be to have a book-review subforum, in which people could post book review threads with polls with 5 options (1 star through 5 stars). This would allow both a star rating, with nice histogram displays, plus the ability to post reviews in the same thread. Then the wiki page could simply have links added for any books that have been reviewed. This is easy enough to add. I submit it to you for discussion, so that you can discern if we have a sufficient critical mass of people who have read books and are willing to post about it to make this worth doing.

I like kobok's suggestion, though I would add that perhaps the book reviews should be reviewed, so that, for instance, Initiation Into Hermetics doesn't have ten pages of reviews and a 6 page argument in the middle concerning the validity of the teachings.
This is to say, I think if we have book reviews, they should be neat, clean, and professional, so people who are genuinely interested in the material don't have to wade through general comments concerning paradigm preference, and can see a review that is as objective as possible.

I do agree with Kobok's suggestion and Big_Boss's addendum.
As subforum with reviews would be wonderful as long as there isn't, as BB said, the 6 pages of arguments in between.
I'm also still supporting my idea of a simple star system by each book title, and I would be willing to do the work. This would be for those who would not be willing to write a decent, thought out, book review (or lack the time). Of course, I do acknowledge that this can be a flawed system subjected to possible tampering by having someone of a paradigm, who isn't a fan of another, going and rating each book as a one. Though, I do believe we can trust the general Veritisans to make the correct choice of not performing that terrible action.
In summary; Aye Aye to subforum, Aye Aye to star system (and also looking for permission to take that project up).
