Yep, that works too. If you repeat a mantra or saying while lying down and deep breathing, most people will eventually experience hypnosis.
The different states are different for everyone, so it's tough to tell exactly what "state" you are in and isn't something to put focus on. Although, I've found that both of the methods outlined (counting down with visualization and progressive muscle relaxation) help to speed up the hypnosis and allow for reaching a deeper, calmer mindstate.
