Magick / Initiation into Hermetics - differences in translations
« on: November 01, 2016, 11:21:32 AM »
I recently bought a physical copy of Initiation into Hermetics from Merkur and was surprised to find it was a completely new translation compared to the pdf commonly found online. The book is a second english translation which was first printed in 2001, as opposed to the first english translation which was in 1962 (which I assume is the one in the pdf). The prose is more clinical and even awkward in some places compared to the first translation.

1st Translation: "Let us now turn to the practical side of the initiation."
2nd Translation: "This is the part of the book in which we begin with the practice of initiation."

1st Translation: "Time is running away like water, never to return."
2nd Translation: "Time flows like water and never returns."

Does anyone know what warranted the second translation? Is the second translation more accurate or faithful to the original German?

Poetry / Temptation on the Path
« on: May 21, 2009, 03:37:38 PM »
(Well... I was lacking motivation in my practices, so I decided to take some time and write this up. Hope it helps to inspire those who are struggling on their spiritual journey)

I looked around my world with doubt
What is it really all about?
I could not see the point of life
So short, and yet so filled with strife.

What is it that pushes men on?
What makes them want to see the dawn?
And so I searched high and low
On how to rid my life of woe
How to make my life worthwhile
And not some worthless rubbish pile

I turned my gaze up to the sky
What better purpose than The Most High?
I became a student of religion
To make a dove out of this dirty pigeon

I waded through a thousand texts
But as I read I grew perplexed
They were all filled with contradiction
What if it's all merely fiction?

A thousand beliefs that I had found
Surely there must be some common ground?
I stopped looking at what set them apart
Instead I looked to their common start

And there I truly found the light
The mystic's way seemed shining bright
There it was I found my calling
To return to the source from which I had fallen

This lowly life I would not miss
What's it compared to heaven's bliss?
I turned away from earthly things
And pushed towards the King of Kings

As time went on I found out why
This path is seldom traveled by
The road to God is paved with tears
A path filled with doubt and fears

Beset by obstacles on all sides
There is no place for you to hide
I look upon the road before me
And this is what I see:

The road is steep,
The chasms deep,
The mountains high,
The deserts dry.

Heaven's light shines from afar
Dark clouds block the shining star
I look ahead with destroyed hope
It seems more than I can cope

My lower self wants to unwind
Return to pleasures left behind
The Devil whispers in my ear
And tempts me with my true soul's fear:
Temptation of the lowly kind
I cannot leave this all behind!

I struggle with this tempting offer
But the Devil will not prosper
I must not give in!
I will not live a life of sin!

I look within my deepest self
And realize what is true wealth
I now know Heaven's treasure
Is worth more than any earthly pleasure

Still the path is marked ahead
Marked by the living and the dead
And so with strength and hope renewed
I march on proud, my soul rescued

I haven't seen the Devil's last
But I can deal with what has passed
With faith in God I will be lead
My journey's end lies far ahead

Magick / Question about Padmasana
« on: April 24, 2009, 03:30:09 AM »
Ok, so I've been doing the stretches for Padmasana recommended by Veos in his article, and also the ones here. Even though I've been doing them pretty regularly (at least once daily), I still can't touch my forehead to my knees as Veos describes should be necessary before doing Padmasana. However, I am able to place my feet in Padmasana without any excruciating pain (as it used to happen before with me). Now it's only a bit tight and moderately uncomfortable (but bearable). Basically, my question is should I start sitting in extended periods in Padmasana now, or should I wait till I am more flexible (i.e. touch forehead to knees) before doing that? Do I risk any damage if I start now?

Magick / Frabato
« on: December 07, 2008, 10:33:19 AM »
In a recent thread, a lot of people quoted Frabato the Magician to back up their points about Franz Bardon. However, when I read it I remember it being distinctly marked as "an occult novel" on one of the first pages. This made me wonder, how much of Frabato is fact and how much is fiction? Which parts are based on true events and which parts are made up?

Projection / stopping conscious breathing
« on: October 15, 2008, 02:59:03 PM »
Ok, the other day I decided to try a different method for projection. I went to sleep early and woke up around midnight when my brother came home. After this "nap" I found it much easier to do the progressive relaxation. I got to a point where I wasn't consciously breathing. Normally I breathe deeply through my nose, but when I realized that I wasn't consciously breathing I noticed that I was taking very short shallow breaths through my mouth. I stopped this and started breathing consciously through my nose, but then the relaxation went away.

My question is, does anyone have any tips to  stop consciously breathing and maintain that state? The reason is that I find it almost impossible to deeply relax my chest area while taking conscious breaths.

Psionics / flaring and seeing the energy
« on: September 04, 2008, 04:36:22 PM »
Does anyone have any methods for flaring constructs?

I tried Psipog's method already but I find it a bit vague and it hasn't worked for me...

Or any training techniques for making yourself able to actually see the energy you are manipulating? Some way to momentarily tune into the planes where the energy is moving around?

Dreams / how do you improve skills while lucid dreaming?
« on: August 21, 2008, 07:22:12 AM »
I remember hearing someone say how you could improve your magick/psi/chi abilities while lucid dreaming. I think it was about increasing sensitivity or just skills in general. Anyone got any tips on how exactly to do this?

Magick / Yoga and magick
« on: August 13, 2008, 03:02:26 PM »
After reading about some famous magicians like Aleister Crowley, Franz Bardon and the articles here, it seems that a lot of magicians practice yoga and that it is a very useful addition to one's training. I'm just curious as to which form/style/system of yoga is best suited to complement magickal training (out of raja, hatha, and the others)?

Main Hall / metaphysics in university?
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:20:31 PM »
Hey everyone. I'm about to go off to university in the next year and I was wondering if you all knew any courses/careers that may be complementary to metaphysics (magick, psionics, chi, etc) seeing as it's a subject of great interest to me and I would like to study anything related to it.

Projection / first OOBE
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:54:20 AM »
Today I had (or almost had) my first real out of body experience! I was taking an afternoon nap, sleeping face down. At the end of my dream I dreamt that I was sleeping face down in the same position. I could feel my body around me and felt myself inside my body as If I were in a shell. I then felt a need to get out so I pushed my hands (my astral hands?) on the bed to drag myself out but my body wasn't actually moving. I could feel a resistance as I pulled myself (my astral body) out and when my torso was out I heard and felt a crack around my spinal column area. Then I slumped down and woke up after a few seconds. All of this was very vivid and detailed (too detailed to be a dream), and I couldn't really see anything, it was more like I felt it, perhaps with a very blurred dark vision.

I've had some experiences before (I've been interested in out of body experiences for about 8 months now), but never this long and detailed (the other ones were forgettable and I could have easily confused them with dreams). I hadn't even prepared for this one, because the last time I practiced to get an OOBE was about a month ago.

I was wondering to any of the others who experienced Astral Projection, what was your first projection experience like, how did you practice/train for it (if you did at all), and where did you go from there?

Hello and Goodbye / hey everyone, i'm helikos
« on: June 07, 2008, 02:19:45 PM »

I first stumbled upon the OEC when randomly surfing the web (i came across PsiPog which led me to this site). I started out by making some psiballs, although I never got much farther than that. I also tried lucid dreaming and astral projection with limited success (but I keep practicing!). When I came to this site I started reading a lot of articles, especially Prophecy's magick articles. So now I'm trying some elemental magick, and hopefully I'll see some results soon.

My interests include martial arts (aikido), biology, and metaphysics .

Just finding out about this whole energy stuff (especially the magick) has changed my worldview and entire outlook on life. I just want to progress as much as I can in this field. It's given me a sense of purpose that I was lacking. I'm really glad to have found this site.
