I really dig the "Frater Akenu" picture.
I want more! Or a graphic novel, like supadude suggested.

Wait, you don't like the table? Damn, it took 30 minutes to get rendered on my crappy computer :-/
Graphic novels are usually graphically over-killed, I don't have a machine and patience to go for that, maybe in the future :D

I think I am still missing some level of realism, but I am slowly improving :)

That one is really good! At first glance you almost think it is a real living room.

Good work, Akenu! You should make graphics for all of you articles and create a book. That would be awesome.

It will take a lot mooooooore time before I have enough materials for a book :D.

I DON'T CARE!

I'm just kidding, but that would be an awesome addition to my magical library.

Hah, it would be great addition to my library as well. Thanks to my recent contacts with local Martinist order they could be my publisher, they have beautiful book covers, green leather with engraved golden font :).

I just finished this scene. Lightning is currently based on ambient occlusion (no light source, no real composition).
Today I should also finish texturing it so then I will upload new image for comparison.

Ah, it's done in Blender :). From Blender 2.6x there is this Cycles Rendering mechanism, you just need to learn some basic nodes manipulation to make such a render. :)

May God bless you.

Hey Bugs, those are some pretty good models, I especially like the boy. Just you didn't spend enough time with materials and lighting.

P.S. there is no prize, we are just supposed to beat each other :D.
Title: Re: 3D Art Challenge
Post by: Bugs on January 08, 2014, 06:11:35 PM
Not much of an effort Akenu, just a little patience (my computer is slow)  to wait while the rendering is finishing.  The boy, remote control and platypus is a template from a public 3d warehouse.  By the way, I use SketchUp for the 3D and kerythea as the renderer.

For the rendering you can try renderfarm.fi, it's for free :).

Just a quick tip about realism:
Cube on the right looks more realistic than the cube on the left.
The reason here lies in the edges. Smoother edges are more natural in the physical world than sharp ones. No matter whether it is a table, a chair or anything else, even the sharpest edge will have a certain level of smoothness.

Yeah, their website isn't really helpful. You need to install BOINC in order for renderfarm to work :).

I think I developed some fetish regarding glass items...
You know, they are so honest... Every material reflects the light, but glass also shows the reflection of the glass, it shows what is reflected and how, it's amazing.

I am decidedly jealous.

I can barely make a basic blocky sword with a single edge. I can stick basic shapes like "rectangle" and "cylinder" together to make the basic layout, but shit keeps screwing up when I try to do things like slanting the top part (so it looks like a real sword and not a meat cleaver) and making an edge. I've tried a few different programs.

I probably just need more practice, but oh well.

Test of a custom procedural camouflage. With a simple change of parameters this can simulate any camouflage pattern.
